Located in Washington, DC’s West End neighborhood, The Columbia Residences has a unique backstory. The popular condominium community was formerly the Columbia Hospital for Women; an acclaimed healthcare facility originally founded towards the end of the Civil War. At the time it was housed in a large home in the Thomas Circle neighborhood. The nascent hospital relocated to its current address around 1870 and was subsequently rebuilt on a much grander scale in 1916 with an Italianate design by noted architect Nathan C. Wyeth. The Columbia went on to become one of the nation’s most advanced pediatric and maternity hospitals, giving birth to about 275,000 children before ultimately closing its doors in the early 2000s. A meticulous renovation process led to the reopening of the campus as an upscale condominium, along with an on-site Trader Joe’s.
