The Columbia Residences has a fascinating backstory. The former Columbia Hospital for Women was founded in 1866 in Thomas Circle, and relocated to the West End neighborhood a decade later. It was reconstructed in 1912, with a stunning design from Nathan S. Wyeth, architect for numerous embassies and government buildings, including the West Wing and Oval Office. The hospital closed in 2002 and reopened four years later as luxury condos with ground floor retail, including a new Trader Joe’s market.
