The Columbia | Market Pulse | January 2021

Those seeking unique living spaces in Washington, DC need look no further. The Columbia Residences is a beautifully realized redevelopment of the former Columbia Hospital for Women. Founded in 1866 in Thomas Circle, the facility was dedicated to serving wives and widows of Civil War soldiers. The hospital moved to the West End neighborhood in 1870 and was rebuilt five years later with a stunning Italianate design from Nathan C. Wyeth. The campus was closed in 2002 and eventually converted into memorable residences blending original architectural details with new modern luxury.

There were no new listings at The Columbia in January. However, there are still some very attractive availabilities, including Unit #422, priced at $950,000. The two-bedroom, two-bath apartment has 1,171 square feet of living space, with dark wood floors in the living areas and carpet in the bedrooms. The open kitchen has granite countertops, a Viking gas range, Viking wine cooler and Sub-Zero fridge. Eat at the island, or take your meals out onto a large private balcony! A washer/dryer combo, one parking space and one storage unit add to the appeal.

Still up for grabs is Unit #434 with a list price of $629,900. The residence has one bedroom, a den and one bath with 810 square feet of space. Lovely hardwoods run throughout the common areas with carpeting in the oversized bedroom. There’s a balcony off the master suite, plus a big walk-in closet and a dual entry marble bath. The gourmet kitchen has nifty sliding doors that open to reveal additional pantry storage.

Competitively priced at $595,000, Unit #309 offers one bedroom, one bath and 755 square feet of living space. Gleaming blonde hardwoods are featured throughout the main living area with its completely open kitchen. You can cook with stainless steel Viking, Sub-Zero and Bosch appliances, and sit at the granite island/bar for breakfast. There’s also a fun little balcony off the bedroom.

Unit #237 expired at the end of the year and has now been relisted for $890,000. The two-bedroom, 2.5-bath apartment exudes architectural charm with its thick crown molding and a sunny window bay. Other features include a balcony and a master suite with en-suite bath including twin-sink vanity, frameless shower and a separate deep-soaking spa tub.

Unit #240 is the most expensive current listing at The Columbia, and also comes with a new price reduction. The three-bedroom, 2.5-bath ground floor apartment has nearly 2,000 square feet of living space and French doors leading out to a private patio. Previously offered at $1,645,000, the spacious condo has since been cut to $1,595,000. Two bedrooms have gorgeous en-suite baths, while the third is currently used as an office with two custom built-in work stations.

Unit #636 went into Active under Contract status in January, meaning that it’s pending but can still receive backup offers. Listed at $1,129,000, the two-bedroom, two-bath apartment overlooking 24th Street has 1,267 square feet of living space with striking mahogany floors throughout, plus a private balcony. The open chef’s kitchen has dark granite counters, cocoa-toned cabinets, a Viking range and Sub-Zero fridge.

Unit #321 listed in January and went under contract just four days later! The one-bedroom, one-bath condo has a bonus loft den that makes a terrific work-from-home space. Listed at $625,000, the roomy residence has wide-plank floors in the living areas and an open kitchen with granite counters and Viking and Sub-Zero appliances. The living room with its 12-foot ceilings opens into a large private terrace.

Those lucky enough to live at The Columbia enjoy lots of perks, including a rooftop swimming pool and lounge, fitness center, billiards and club rooms, front desk and concierge. There are also three furnished guest suites for visitors, as well as an on-site Trader Joe’s—the ultimate in grocery convenience. You’ll also find an Urban Boxing on the grounds. From the incredible timeless exterior to an ideal location, this is a very attractive place to live.
