The Columbia | Market Pulse | January 2022

Few condominium communities have as interesting a history as The Columbia Residences. It was once one of the nation’s most prestigious women’s hospitals, first opening its doors at the former Hill Mansion in Thomas Circle in 1866. Then known as The Columbia Hospital for Women and Lying-in Asylum, the nascent facility moved to its present location in the West End just five years later, and was rebuilt with a much larger and grander design in 1916. The healthcare facility ultimately closed in 2002, and was converted to luxury condos in 2010.

There were no new listings in January. There are still a handful of availabilities, however, starting with Unit #424, currently listed at $675,000. The handsome residence boasts a loft bedroom, one bath and 822 square feet of interior space. Hardwood floors are in the living areas, with carpet and an entire wall of built-ins in the bedroom. A modern Euro-style open gourmet kitchen with starburst lights over the granite island, is set into a one wall, thus preserving floor space. The condo also features a balcony and a high-end washer/dryer stack.

Unit #324 is priced at $649,999. The open and airy apartment has one loft bedroom, one bath and 816 square feet of living space. Lovely blonde hardwood floors are found throughout the residence, adding to the warm and inviting feel. The bedroom has double closets and a cutout at the top of one wall, and the bath features a large frameless shower. The open cook space is set into a single wall, with granite counters, upscale appliances and pendant lighting over the prep/dining island. A balcony overlooks the courtyard for extra appeal.

As with the other availabilities this month, Unit #317 has a loft-style bedroom and one bath. Offered at $579,000, the condo has a large front foyer, leading into a great room concept that brings the main living, dining and cooking area together. There are hardwood floors in the main area, with huge windows allowing plenty of natural light inside. A terrific open kitchen is set into one wall, with modern cabinetry, dark granite counters, stainless steel appliances and a dining island that will seat four. Additionally, a washer and dryer combo tuck neatly into a closet that is inside the bathroom with its granite counters and frameless shower.

There was one sale in January. Unit #501 sold for its full asking price of $949,999. The two-bedroom, two-bath condominium with its 1,200 sq. ft. layout boasts gorgeous wide-plank floors throughout. Other features include an open gourmet kitchen with maple Poggenpohl cabinets, and Viking and Sub-Zero stainless steel appliances. There’s also a large private balcony, a giant walk-in closet in the owners’ suite, and an in-unit washer and dryer.

Unit #416 has been withdrawn. The renovated residence had been listed at $570,000, with a loft bedroom, one bath, dramatic 10-foot ceilings and 764 square feet of interior space. Blonde hardwood are found throughout, except the bedroom which has tasteful gray carpet. This apartment is in the original historic building and has loads of architectural charm, including deep-set windows and a balcony overlooking the courtyard. We’ll keep an eye on this one to see if it becomes active again.

There’s no shortage of amenities for residents of The Columbia, starting with an on-site Trader Joe’s market. Other features include a friendly and dedicated front desk with concierge service, a rooftop swimming pool and lounge, a well-equipped fitness center, billiards and club rooms, and three furnished guest suites for visitors. The West End neighborhood itself is also part of the attraction, with numerous nearby coffeehouses and eateries.
