The Columbia Residences is a condominium community with a unique backstory. Previously known as The Columbia Hospital for Women, the acclaimed healthcare facility was founded in Thomas Circle in 1866, before moving to its present location in the West End five years later. It was rebuilt in 1916 with a grand design from noted architect Nathan C. Wyeth. The hospital closed in 2002 and was converted to luxury condos in 2010. Among the many amenities is an on-site Trader Joe’s.

Recent sales activity at The Columbia has outpaced new listings. The only currently available condo is Unit #406, entering the market in June with an asking price of $1,050,000. The two-bedroom, two-bath residence has 1,181 square feet of living space with gleaming bamboo hardwood floors throughout the living areas. The great room concept includes a completely open gourmet kitchen with a Wolfe range and Sub-Zero fridge, as well as a wonderful bonus room with bay windows. The only other new listing in June, Unit #429, has already gone under contract, receiving an accepted offer after just five days on market. The primary suite has walk-in closets and an ensuite bath, while the second bedroom is located at loft-level and could also be used as a wonderful work-from-home space. Hardwood floors, an open gourmet kitchen with granite counters and upscale appliances, soaring ceilings and an outdoor terrace add to the appeal.

Unit #942 came to market in May and quickly went into pending status. The spectacular two-level penthouse with two bedrooms and 2.5 baths ultimately sold for $1,800,000. At the main level is an expansive living area with plantation shutters, a dining room, a wonderful open gourmet kitchen, and the two bedrooms. An impressive owners’ suite has its own connected office/den with large windows, as well as a gorgeous ensuite bath. Spiral stairs lead to an upstairs bonus room with a wet bar and fireplace, leading out to a 350 square foot private roof deck.

The other June sale is Unit #317 with a loft-style bedroom, one bath, and an attractive open 850 square foot layout. It closed at $525,000 after listing for $559,000. Boasting high ceilings and lots of sun from large windows with brand new day/night shades, the apartment has beautiful hardwood floors throughout the main living and dining areas. The loft bedroom has neutral toned carpet. The gourmet kitchen is completely open to the main living area, with handsome black granite counters and dining island, plus upscale stainless steel appliances. A washer and dryer, plus one parking space, is included.

Those fortunate enough to live at The Columbia enjoy numerous amenities in addition to the previously mentioned on-site Trader Joe’s. The staffed front desk including concierge, is known for its friendly and dedicated service. There is also a fantastic rooftop swimming pool and lounge, a well-equipped fitness center, billiards and club rooms, and three furnished guest suites for visitors. Among the many nearby restaurants and bakeries are Blue Duck Tavern, Raskia, Marcel’s by Robert Wiedmaier, Ris, Imperfecto, Uptowner Café, Bourbon Coffee, and Tatte Bakery.
