The Columbia Residences is one of Washington, DC’s most popular condominium communities, with a rich and unique history. Previously known as The Columbia Hospital, the women’s healthcare facility was founded in Thomas Circle in 1866, before moving to a new location in the West End five years later. It was rebuilt in 1916 with a grand design from noted architect Nathan C. Wyeth. The hospital closed in 2002 and was converted to luxury condos in 2010. Among the many amenities is an on-site Trader Joe’s.
After a rash of sales and listing activity in the early months of 2022, things have slowed down at The Columbia. Perhaps residents like where they are and have decided to stay put!
The only available condo as of this report is Unit #317. Offered at $559,000, the residence has a loft-style bedroom, one bath, and a roomy and attractive 850 square foot layout. With high ceilings and lots of sun from large windows with brand new day/night shades, the apartment has lovely hardwood floors throughout the main living and dining areas. The loft bedroom has neutral toned carpet. The gourmet kitchen is completely open to the main living area, with handsome black granite counters and dining island, plus upscale stainless steel appliances. A washer and dryer, plus one parking space, is included.
There was just one new listing in May, and it has already gone under contract. Unit #942 is a spectacular two-level penthouse with two bedrooms, 2.5 baths, that was offered at $1,930,000. It is now in Active Under Contract status, meaning it’s pending with contingencies. At the main level is an expansive living area with plantation shutters, a dining room, a wonderful open gourmet kitchen, and the two bedrooms. An impressive owners’ suite has its own connected office/den with large windows, as well as a gorgeous ensuite bath. Spiral stairs lead to an upstairs bonus room with a wet bar and fireplace, leading out to a 350 square foot private roof deck.
While there were no closings in May, there were two sales in April. Unit #217 is an exclusive Life At The Top listing that was offered at $499,500 and quickly went under contract, closing above the asking price at $505,500. The lovely one-bedroom, one-bath apartment with gleaming hardwood floors offers 741 square feet of living space, embellished by a cute Juliet balcony off the main living area. The large gourmet kitchen features granite counters, a high-end Viking and Sub-Zero package, and bar stool seating. The owner’s suite offers two closets including a walk-in, an in-unit washer/dryer, an a dual-entry bath with stone vanity top.
The other April closing was Unit #421, a one-bedroom, one-bath residence with a bonus loft-style den. The 850 square foot condo listed at $675,000 and sold for $660,000. Wide-plank bamboo hardwood floors are found in the main living areas, the kitchen, and the den, with cream-colored carpet in the bedrooms. A chocolate-hued gourmet kitchen is topped off with Viking and Sub-Zero appliances, granite counters, and soft-close cabinetry. The bedroom has a frosted glass sliding door and a custom closet system. There’s also a balcony, and an in-unit washer/dryer.
Residents at The Columbia not only enjoy an on-site Trader Joe’s market, but numerous other amenities as well. The staffed front desk including concierge, is known for its friendly and dedicated service. There is also a fantastic rooftop swimming pool and lounge, a well-equipped fitness center, billiards and club rooms, and three furnished guest suites for visitors. Among the many nearby restaurants and bakeries are Blue Duck Tavern, Raskia, Marcel’s by Robert Wiedmaier, Ris, Imperfecto, Uptowner Café, Bourbon Coffee, and Tatte Bakery.
