The Columbia Residences is one of Washington, DC’s most unique condominium communities. The former women’s healthcare facility began as the Columbia Hospital for Women and Laying-In Asylum in the Thomas Circle neighborhood in 1866. It moved to its present location in the West End just five years later, and then was completely rebuilt with a grand Italianate design from noted architect Nathan C. Wyeth in 1916. The hospital ultimately closed in 2002 and was converted to luxury condos in 2010. Among the many amenities is an on-site Trader Joe’s!
New listings don’t often come up at The Columbia, and in fact, there are no availabilities as of this writing. There was one sale in May. Unit #628 is a penthouse level apartment that went under contract 12 days after hitting the market. The one-bedroom, one-bath residence with a bonus den closed for the full asking price of $929,900 on May 10. The spacious condo enjoys 1,000 square feet of living space, with high ceilings, dramatic arched windows throughout, and hardwood floors in the living and cooking areas. The large bathroom has a new Grohe SPA frameless shower, and an extended twin sink vanity with Grohe fixtures. The gourmet kitchen features SubZero and Viking stainless steel appliances. There’s an in-unit washer and dryer, and the den can serve nicely as a work-from-home space, or guest sleeping.
Unit #441 sold in March after an accepted offer the month before. The 1,405 square foot residence with two bedrooms and two full baths closed at $1,225,000. The sunny and spacious apartment has an open floor plan that brings living, dining, and cooking areas together in a Great Room concept. Wide-plank hardwood floors run throughout the entire corner condo. A large owners’ suite includes a walk-in closet with custom organizers, and a marble ensuite bath with a twin-sink vanity, deep soaking tub, and frameless shower. Th second bedroom has a custom Murphy bed complemented by custom built-in closets, and plantation shutters. The open chef-inspired kitchen fits seamlessly into a corner of the main living space, and features white cabinetry, white stone counters, and high-end stainless steel appliances. Enjoy meals out on the oversized private terrace!
There was one other sale in March, and it topped the list-to-sales price ratio for all the buildings we tracked for that month. Unit #233 is a one-bedroom residence with one bath and a bonus den. After listing for $500,000, the condo was bid up to $550,000 (110 percent of asking) in a period of just three days. The floorplan includes a large main living space that includes a gourmet kitchen with stainless steel appliances and granite counters. A spacious den is perfect for an office, or an additional bedroom. A charming balcony off the living area is great for morning coffee. The primary bedroom suite has plantation shutters and a big walk-in closet. A marble bath, in-unit washers and dryer, and reserved garage parking and extra storage add to the allure.
In addition to the visually striking architecture and unique history, those living at the Columbia enjoy a bevy of amenities. The staffed front desk and concierge are known for friendly service. There is a terrific swimming pool and deck lounge, a club room with billiards, a well-equipped fitness center, and three furnished guest suites for visitors. And of course, there’s the popular on-site Trader Joe’s market, providing the ultimate food shopping convenience. The West End neighborhood is also part of the appeal, with plenty of coffee shops and restaurants within easy walking distance, as well as the new West End Library.
