The Columbia Residences is one of Washington, DC’s most unique condominium communities. Home to 225 residential units as well as an onsite Trader Joe’s, the West End property is the former home of the Columbia Hospital for Women. Founded at the end of the Civil War, the original facility was located inside a home in Thomas Circle before moving to the Tench Ringgold House in the West End in 1870. The hospital was rebuilt on a much grander scale in 1918, featuring an Italianate design from architect Nathan C. Wyeth. The Columbia would go on to become one of the nation’s most advanced pediatric and maternity hospitals before ultimately closing its doors in the early 2000s. A meticulous renovation process led to the reopening of the campus as condos in 2006.
Unit #328 returned to the market in late May with an asking price of $775,000. The 955 square foot condo has one bedroom, one bath, and a loft den that can serve nicely as flex space. A long and open main living and dining area includes a gourmet kitchen that tucks neatly into a corner with dark granite counters, stainless steel Sub-Zero and Viking appliances, and hanging pendant lights.
Still available after listing in April is Unit #431. Offered at $1,334,900, the 1,427 square foot residence has been remodeled, resulting in an intriguing two-bedroom, two-bath layout. What was once a den has been turned into a private dining room. That leaves the main living area with its adjacent open gourmet kitchen as an uncrowded place to relax in, complete with a nice private terrace. Parking is included.
Unit #730 remains active at $1,300,000. The two-bedroom penthouse features a large and open main living area with oversized windows on two sides. Beautiful cherry floors in the main living areas combine with cream carpet in the private quarters. The open gourmet kitchen has dark granite counters, espresso toned cabinetry, and upscale stainless stee appliances.
Unit #205 is listed at $1,999,999, with two bedrooms, two baths, and 1,385 square feet of living space. The nicely renovated condo features new floors, and an upgraded kitchen with quartz counters, Viking and Sub-Zero appliances, and a sleek black granite sink with a touch control faucet. Other notables include the private balcony, recently replaced washer and dryer, reserved parking, and climate-controlled storage.
Unit #520 was reduced in price in May, from $775,000 down to $749,000. The turnkey residence has a generous 880 square foot layout that includes one bedroom, one bath, and a bonus loft den. High ceilings, lovely wood floors, tasteful custom wall paint, and sliding barn-style doors leading to the primary bedroom add to the charm. An upgraded washer/dryer, reserved parking, and extra storage complete the picture.
There was one closing at the Columbia in May. Unit #217 had a price reduction down to $499,000, a factor that may have triggered the condo’s subsequent full priced purchase. The airy one-bedroom, one-bath apartment with 729 square feet of living space boasts 10-foot ceilings, blonde hardwood floors and an open gourmet kitchen with Viking and Sub-Zero appliances.
Unit #506 has been withdrawn from the market. The two-bedroom, two-bath residence with 1,278 square feet of living space had been recently renovated, including new bamboo floors in the main living areas and new quartz counters in the kitchen. We will keep tabs on this sunny condo to see if it returns to active status.
