The Columbia | Market Pulse | November 2019

The Columbia Residences is a condominium community with a unique history. It was born as the Columbia Hospital for Women in 1866, located in Thomas Circle. The hospital, which originally served wives and widows of Civil War soldiers, moved to the West End a decade later and was rebuilt in 1912. The facility remained open well into the modern era, finally closing in 2002 and reopening in 2006 as luxury condos with ground floor retail, including a new Trader Joe’s market. The distinctive original architecture from Nathan C. Wyeth was augmented by two new similarly styled wings during the redevelopment phase.

There was only one new listing at this popular address in November. Unit #428 is a 2-bedroom, 1-bath residence located in the historic main building. The 894 square foot apartment features a loft-style den, lovely wood floors, soaring 12-foot ceilings and deep-set windows with southern views. Listed at $725,000, the condo also boasts an open chef’s kitchen with Viking and Sub-Zero appliances, tons of closet space and a modern dual entry bath with a huge frameless shower and a twin sink vanity.

Deep-set windows and unique architectural details add to the appeal.

The 2-bedroom, 2-bath residence with 1,250 square feet of living space has beautiful hardwood floors in the living area, new carpets in the bedrooms, a contemporary gourmet kitchen with granite counters and stainless steel appliances, plus a balcony!

Unit #235 closed at the affordable price of $475,000 after listing in October for $499,000. The 1-bedroom, 1-bath apartment with 750 square feet of space has striking dark hardwood floors, a lovely open gourmet kitchen with dark granite counters, plantation shutters and sliding wood and frosted glass doors leading to the bedroom suite.

There are amenities aplenty at the Columbia, including a rooftop swimming pool, a state-of-the-art fitness center, billiards room, club room and three furnished guest suites. Add to that, a dry cleaners, an Urban Boxing location and the previously mentioned Trader Joe’s, right there on the condominium property! You can bet this place is popular with West End locals, as well as those actually living on the historic grounds.
