The Columbia | Market Pulse | December 2020

Washington, DC is known for its unusual adaptive reuse projects, such as former schools, churches and auto showrooms that have been converted into condominiums. But none are quite as unique as The Columbia Residences in the West End neighborhood. The former Columbia Hospital for Women dates back to 1866 and was dedicated to serving the wives and widows of Civil War soldiers. Initially established in Thomas Circle, the facility was rebuilt in the West End neighborhood in 1876 with a stunning design from Nathan C. Wyeth). The facility finally closed in 2002 and by 2006, had been converted to condos.

There were no new listings at The Columbia in December. There are still some attractive availabilities, however, including Unit #240 with three bedrooms, 2.5 baths and nearly 2,000 square feet of interior space. Offered at $1,645,000, the ground floor apartment has French doors that open to a private slate patio and lawn area. Two bedrooms have gorgeous en-suite baths, while the third is currently used as an office with two custom built-in work stations, and doors leading to the patio. There was one closing in December. Unit #700, known as “The Belvedare,” is the crown jewel of The Columbia. It sold quickly for $3,050,000, after listing for $3 million. The unique penthouse at the center of the original building has 3,880 square feet of living space and 1,900 square feet of exterior space spread over four separate areas. The front terrace with its distinctive Tuscan columns and flanking towers, are integral parts of the building’s façade.

The amenities at The Columbia are impressive indeed, with a rooftop swimming pool and lounge, fitness center, billiards and club rooms, front desk and concierge, and three furnished guest suites for visitors.
