The Columbia is a historic condominium in Washington’s West End neighborhood with 225 luxury residences and a ground floor Trader Joe’s. The Italianate-style complex was constructed in 1916 as the Columbia Hospital for Women. It served that purpose until 2002, but has since been completely restored and renovated.

New to the market in May is a rare opportunity for a short sale penthouse at this prestigious location. Listed at $1,299,000, Unit #936 is a 2-bedroom, 2-bath duplex with 1,779 square feet of living space. Among the features are hardwood floors and spiral iron stairs leading to a large bonus room with wet bar and sliders to a private roof deck.

Listed in late April is Unit #602. The spacious corner residence with southern exposure has 2-bedrooms, 2-baths and 1,490 square feet of living space. Wide-plank hardwood floors, a master suite, a gourmet kitchen with Viking stainless steel appliances and a large balcony are all part of the package, priced at $1,350,000.

While no condos went under agreement in May, there was one closing. Unit #302 has 2-bedrooms and 2-baths and 1,442 square feet of space. The apartment has been extensively renovated with wide-plank hickory floors throughout, new kitchen and new baths, including a steam shower and Japanese bidet in the master bathroom. The closing price was $1,318,500, after being listed at $1,339,000.

Unit #324 was listed in April but has now been withdrawn. The 1-bedroom, 1-bath loft with 816 square feet of interior space had been priced at $699,000. Among the features in this flat are blonde hardwood floors, 11-foot ceilings and an open kitchen with pendant lighting and Viking and Sub-Zero appliances.

Also withdrawn is Unit #906, a duplex penthouse with nearly 1,500 square feet of living space, hardwood floors, an owner’s suite featuring twin sink marble vanity, an open kitchen with stainless steel appliances, floating spiral stairs, upstairs family room and a private roof terrace. The most recent asking price was $1,325,000.

In addition to the on-site Trader Joe’s, residents at the Columbia enjoy a wonderful rooftop swimming pool, a state-of-the-art fitness center, billiards room, front desk and concierge, and lovely grassy lawns. The neighborhood itself is centrally located, with the new West End Library, popular shops and restaurants, the Landmark Theatres West End, and more.
