The Columbia | Market Pulse | October 2020

You’ll be hard-pressed to find a more unique, or popular condominium community in the Washington area than The Columbia Residences. The Columbia Hospital for Women was founded in Thomas Circle in 1866, and was initially dedicated to serving wives and widows of Civil War soldiers. The hospital relocated to the West End neighborhood in 1876 and was rebuilt a decade later, with a stunning design from Nathan C. Wyeth. It shut its doors after 136 years of dedicated service, and was redeveloped as luxury condos for sale! Among the many amenities is a ground floor Trader Joe’s.

Unit #237 came back on the market in October after being temporarily taken off the month prior. The two-bedroom, two-bath residence with 1,163 square feet of living space is listed at $895,000. Architectural charm blends with a contemporary open floorplan, including blonde hardwood floors, high ceilings and thick crown molding. The gourmet kitchen features dark granite counters, hanging pendant lights, a Viking range, Sub-Zero fridge and Poggenpohl cabinets. The bath has a twin sink vanity, frameless shower and separate soaking tub. There’s also a cute balcony off the living area.

Still available is Unit #242 with an $899,900 price tag. The sunny two-bedroom, two-bath ground floor residence offers 1,107 square feet of living space, with blonde hardwood floors and French doors leading out to the courtyard. A handsome open kitchen is set into one corner with dark granite counters and high-end appliances. An in-unit washer/dryer plus parking and storage, are included.

Offering proof that competitively priced flats are available at the Columbia, is Unit #309. The one-bedroom, one-bath dwelling has 755 square feet of living space and is listed at $595,000. Hardwood floors run throughout the main living area with its completely open kitchen. You can cook away with stainless steel Viking, Sub-Zero and Bosch appliances, and sit at the granite island/bar for breakfast. There’s also a fun little balcony; the perfect place to enjoy morning coffee.

Unit #636 has a new price reduction. The two-bedroom, two-bath apartment overlooking 24th Street is currently offered at $1,129,000, representing a $60,000 drop. The 1,267 square foot layout includes a formal entry and foyer, with richly-hued mahogany hardwood floors leading into a large main living area with a wide window bay. The open chef’s kitchen has dark granite counters, cocoa-toned cabinets, a Viking range and Sub-Zero fridge. Walk-in closets, luxurious baths and a private balcony add to the appeal. Garage parking and storage are included.

There were no new pending contracts in October. There were, however, a couple of closings. The first is Unit #203, which sold for $1,680,000 after listing for $1,750,000. The two-bedroom, 2.5-bath apartment with 1,915 square feet of living space has a den large enough to be used as a third bedroom. Blonde hardwoods, lots of windows and a very spacious open living area that includes a gourmet kitchen, add to the appeal. French doors lead out to a large private patio and yard.

The other closing in October was Unit #430. The two-bedroom, two-bath flat with 1,220 square feet of space listed for $930,000 before selling for $920,000. The bright and sunny front-facing residence has beautiful hardwood floors throughout, plus an attractive open gourmet kitchens with hanging pendant lights over the granite breakfast bar. The master bedroom has wide double doors, a huge California closet and an en-suite marble bath with a twin-sink vanity. A private balcony, stacked washer/dryer and assigned parking add to the appeal.

Residents at The Columbia enjoy a bevy of amenities, including a rooftop swimming pool, fitness center, billiards and club rooms, front desk and concierge, and three furnished guest suites for visitors. There’s also the on-site Trader Joe’s, as well as an Urban Boxing location. From the striking architectural details to a terrific location, this is a very cool place to live.
