The Columbia | Market Pulse | February 2021

The Columbia Residences is a uniquely charming redevelopment of the former Columbia Hospital for Women. Initially founded in 1866 in Thomas Circle, the facility was dedicated to serving wives and widows of Civil War soldiers. The hospital moved to the West End in 1870 and was rebuilt five years later with a stunning design from Nathan C. Wyeth. The campus was closed in 2002 and eventually converted into a luxury condominium community with a wide range of amenities.

While there were no new listings at The Columbia in February, there are still some great availabilities. A case in point is Unit #240, listed at $1,595,000. The three-bedroom, 2.5-bath ground floor apartment has nearly 2,000 square feet of living space, gorgeous hardwood floors and French doors leading out to a private patio. Two bedrooms have en-suite baths while the third is currently used as an office with two custom built-in work stations.

Unit #442 is priced at $950,000, with two bedrooms, two baths and 1,171 square feet of living space. There are richly hued wood floors in the living areas and carpet in the bedrooms. An open gourmet kitchen features granite countertops, a Viking gas range, Viking wine cooler and Sub-Zero fridge. A large private balcony, a washer/dryer combo, one parking space and a storage unit add to the appeal.

Still available is Unit #237 with two bedrooms, 2.5 baths and 1,163 square feet of space. Priced at $890,000, this apartment exudes architectural charm with its thick crown molding and a sunny window bay. Other features include a balcony and a master suite with an en-suite bath including a twin-sink vanity, frameless shower and a separate deep-soaking spa tub.

Still up for grabs is Unit #434 with a list price of $629,900. The residence has one bedroom, a den and one bath with 810 square feet of space. Lovely hardwoods run throughout the common areas and den, with carpeting in the oversized bedroom. There’s a balcony off the master suite, plus a big walk-in closet and a dual entry marble bath. The gourmet kitchen has a pantry with frosted glass sliding doors.

Competitively priced at $595,000, Unit #309 offers one bedroom, one bath and 755 square feet of living space. Gleaming blonde hardwoods are featured throughout the main living area with its completely open kitchen. You can cook with stainless steel Viking, Sub-Zero and Bosch appliances, and sit at the granite island/bar for breakfast. There’s also a fun little balcony off the bedroom.

Unit #636 sold in February for $1,115,000 after listing for $1,129,000. The two-bedroom, two-bath apartment overlooking 24th Street has 1,267 square feet of living space with striking mahogany floors and a private balcony. The open chef’s kitchen has dark granite counters, cocoa-toned cabinets, a Viking range and Sub-Zero fridge.

Unit #321 is due to close in early March. The one-bedroom, one bath condo with a bonus loft den, was listed in January at $625,000 and went under contract just four days later! The roomy residence has wide-plank floors in the living areas and an open kitchen with granite counters and Viking and Sub-Zero appliances. The living room with its 12-foot ceilings opens into a large private terrace.

The Residences at the Columbia offer tons of amenities, including a rooftop swimming pool and lounge, fitness center, billiards and club rooms, front desk and concierge. There are also three furnished guest suites for visitors, as well as an on-site Trader Joe’s—the ultimate in grocery convenience. You’ll also find an Urban Boxing on the grounds. From the beautiful facades to an ideal location, this is a great place to live.
