Offering a unique history paired with modern amenities, The Columbia Residences was previously known as Columbia Hospital for Women. The highly regarded women’s healthcare facility was founded in Thomas Circle in 1866, before moving to a new location in the West End five years later. It was rebuilt in 1916 with a grand design from noted architect Nathan C. Wyeth. The hospital closed in 2002 and was converted to luxury condos in 2010. Among the many amenities is an on-site Trader Joe’s.
The enduring popularity of The Columbia can make for a low inventory of available condominiums. This is currently the case, with no new listings in October. For that reason, we are including Unit #312 which comes to market on November 1, 2022. Priced at $689,000, the one bedroom, 1.5-bath apartment with 840 square feet of living space is the only active listing as of this writing. The combined living, dining, and cooking areas are completely open, with high ceilings, lovely hardwood floors, a convenient powder room, and sliders leading out to a lovely private balcony.
There were three sales in October, beginning with Unit #517. The three-bedroom, 2.5-bath residence with 1,791 square feet of living space listed at $1,495,000 and received an accepted offer just six days later. The generously sized unit closed well above the asking price at $1,534,076. With one of the largest floorplans at The Columbia, the condo features a 196 square foot private terrace, along with an open living, dining, and cooking area that receives an abundance of natural light from the giant floor-to-ceiling windows. There are hardwood floors throughout the main living areas as well as the den/third bedroom, with cream carpeting in two other bedrooms.
Unit #908 listed on September 16 and went under contract just two days later. Originally offered at $1,395,000, the stunning penthouse closed above the list amount, at $1.4 million. The 1,550 square foot apartment has two levels of living space, with two bedrooms and two baths. The upper level includes an entertainment room with wet bar, with sliders leading out to an expansive private rooftop terrace offering skyline views. Also worth noting are the California Closets in each bedroom, a sunny eat-in kitchen, and a wall of windows in the main living room area.
Unit #601 sold for its full asking price $975,000. The two-bedroom, two-bath apartment was another fast turnaround, entering September 10 with an accepted offer three days later. The recently remodeled condo has 1,166 square feet of interior space with lovely wide plank hardwood floors throughout. The primary bedroom suite has a huge walk-in closet and a luxurious marble ensuite bath. The upscale kitchen with its stainless steel appliances, is tucked neatly into a corner and is completely open to the rest of the main living and dining areas, maximizing space and further adding to it with a large private balcony.
Residents at The Columbia not only enjoy an on-site Trader Joe’s market, but numerous other amenities as well. The staffed front desk including concierge, is known for its friendly and dedicated service. There is also a fantastic rooftop swimming pool and lounge, a well-equipped fitness center, billiards and club rooms, and three furnished guest suites for visitors. Among the many nearby restaurants and bakeries are Blue Duck Tavern, Raskia, Marcel’s by Robert Wiedmaier, Ris, Imperfecto, Uptowner Café, Bourbon Coffee, and Tatte Bakery.
